The meteoric rise in popularity of the sport of MMA in the Philippines is without doubt, greatly influenced by the country’s top MMA promotion, the Universal Reality Combat Championship. The URCC recently announced that they will honor Philippine MMA personalities by inducting them to the URCC Asian MMA Hall of Fame.
A total of 13 categories of inductees will be selected from 60% of fan votes and 40% from selected MMA journalist’s votes.

A proud partner of the ONEFC Network, the largest network in Asian Mixed Martial Arts, this gym in Marikina called “The Goat Locker Boxing Gym” is one heck of a “game changer” in this part of Asia. It dares to set the trend and gives premium on innovation and standardization, among others. Mr. Ferdie Abadilla Munsayac, the gym’s owner, a retired US Navy for 20 years, attributes the gym’s attention to detail to his training in the military. This is most exemplified through their investing on a 32 feet, Standard-sized Professional MMA Octagon.
Heightened talks about Shinya Aoki moving to the featherweight division have been making its rounds on the internet this past few weeks. A master of submission, and one of the world's top lightweights, reports about Aoki’s intention to go down to featherweight dates as far back as April 2013 prior to him winning the Lightweight title against Kotetsu Boku at One FC 8. It was detailed in the interview and complete report by bloodyelbow.com.
The report said: "Heath, Shinya and I have talked about this for the last year or so, and all three of us have decided that it is best for Shinya's future," said Chatri Sityodtong, the founder and one of the head coaches at Evolve MMA, "He can easily make 145. He is too small to be a lightweight, and he will be a huge featherweight. His body type at 145 is akin to Jon Jones with a huge wingspan and reach." There is no denying that Combat Sports or Mixed Martial Arts in particular, is on the rise in the Philippines. I remember about six or seven years ago, many fitness gyms in the Philippines, especially in the northern part of the country, brilliantly capitalized on the success and popularity of Manny Pacquiao. As The Pacman became a household name all over the world, more people got hooked into boxing. Ordinary fitness buffs, office workers, people from all walks of life and of whatever gender, enrolled at gyms that had boxing facilities, and had boxing as part of its diverse fitness classes. Some went to the gym to lose weight, others went to learn and train.
In the south, Boxing has always remained as the top most favourite sport and recreation by Filipinos in the Visayan region. During those years, around 2006-2007, the UFC has continuously rose to popularity, with the likes of Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, BJ Penn, - among others, the most recognizable names of MMA fighters. Back in those years I didn’t know that URCC was the Philippine's pioneer MMA organization, although I've already heard of it, and at that time it has gradually and steadily made its presence known. URCC was already holding its eighth or 10th MMA events in Manila. Ever since its inaugural event in 2002, more and more Pinoy Martial Arts practitioners from all over the country got their chance to test their skills against other fighters. From 2011 to today, International MMA organizations such as the Guam based PXC, and Singapore based One FC, have held big events in the country for the past two years or so (PXC -8 times, and One FC –twice). In this year alone, three big events were already held between the two international MMA promotions, and we are expecting another two or 3 more this year. There is a large pool of MMA talents in the country as more gyms have specialized in training Mixed Martial Arts. This TUF Season 18 will feature both men and women Bantamweights for the first time.
I am happy and feel much privileged to have photographed the last two Philippine events of the Pacific Xtreme Combat particularly because I am aware that I am photographing future MMA superstars who can make it to the highest levels in the sport someday. PXC has proven to be a breeding ground for fighters with great potentials to be signed by Bellator or UFC, the worlds' two most prestigious MMA organizations. In an article by mmahawaii.com, Ian dela Cuesta (7-3-2nc), Russel Doane (9-1) and Louis Smolka (3-0) were among the hopeful Male Bantamweights in the hunt for a UFC contract via TUF Season 18. The aforementioned fighters has fought (and are fighting) in the PXC, Asia-Pacific's premiere MMA organization. Former PXC fighter Jon Tuck made it to TUF Season 15, although he lost via UD in the entry round, he was signed by the UFC and made a successful UFC debut in UFC on Fuel TV 6: Cung Le vs. Rich Franklin. In case you didn’t know, a big-time Philippine MMA event is happening this April 27, 2013 at SMX Convention Center in Pasay. Featuring an explosive fight card from non-other than the biggest Philippine MMA promotion itself, the URCC, and it is dubbed as “URCC 23 – Unrivaled”.
In an effort to find answers to essential questions that I thought every URCC MMA fan like me would want to know, I reached out to the Main Event fighters of URCC 23. I saw Red Romero’ fight at URCC Dekada via live streaming but one of my honest to goodness fundamental question leading up to URCC 23 is, “Who is Red Romero?” So, without further ado, below are info from our Q&A on “Things I needed to know” about The Filipino Bolo Punch. The Panagbenga Flower Festival in Baguio City is without a doubt one of the most unique and most colorful festivals in the Philippines. My hometown mountain resort city is known as the country’s Summer Capital, as many local and foreign tourists are drawn here because of its cool climate. Baguio is popularly known as the country’s main hub for vegetable products. Vegetable Dealers transact wholesale business here, for retail distribution to other places in the country. Aside from vegetable products, the city is also known as a hub for the flowers that are sold in Dangwa Flower Market in the capital city of Manila.
